Essence Cosmetics first impressions

Essence Cosmetics first impressions

I was super excited to receive my huge bundle of Essence Cosmetics as a PR package. I had never tried this brand before and as such I had no idea what to expect from the quality of the products. This is an incredibly affordable brand that is also cruelty free which for me is becoming more and more of an important issue when buying cosmetics.

The first thing I noticed was the packaging and I have to say that I was impressed! The quality of the packaging doesn’t feel cheap whatsoever considering the brands price point. In fact, they mirror the quality of more expensive drug store brands.

The lip liner I received was in the colour ‘So un-grey-tful’ and is a deep nude colour. I used this and was surprised just how creamy and moisturising the formula was which is something I love as I have chronically dry lips. I used this as my only lip product for an entire day in order to thoroughly test it out and I have to say that it did not dry my lips out one bit! This liner has some staying power too with no touch ups over the course of the day despite drinking several cups of coffee! Safe to say I was impressed.

All I can say about the lipsticks is WOW! They are now my new favourite lip product and have a permanent place inside my handbag! I’m so in love with these that I’m off to buy backups even though I have only just started using these. They’re so creamy and moisturising its like wearing a lip balm but with the perfect amount of colour. A bonus to these is that they also smell incredible, like chocolate, and they taste sweet too! If you’re considering buying anything from this brand then go for a lipstick as you will not be disappointed.

The liquid lipstick is again moisturising and not at all matte. So if you love a matte liquid lipstick then this one might not be for you. This one has a vinyl finish and is more like a highly pigmented gloss without the stickiness. I got the colour ‘bite me if you can’ and it is the perfect vampy red for a night out with the girls.

The ‘Holo Wow’ is a cream highlighter stick which Essence call a sparkle stick and sparkle it does. It’s a creamy white stick when you take the top off you expect a pearly sheen however, when you apply this the sparkle is a soft pink that is to die for. If you like your highlighters blinding and with a pop of colour then this is for you as its totally buildable. If you prefer a subtler finish, then apply with a light hand or pat on with your fingertips. You could totally use this as a cream shadow and a lip topper if you love that sparkle finish too.

The mermaid eye-shadow palette is every young girls dream. Pink, teal, blue and gold shade in both glitter and matte finishes provide a pop of colour to your makeup bag. The pigment on the matte finishes is much more intense than the sparkle shades but given the low-price points of this brand this is a solid eyeshadow palette if you prefer your sparkles with a more delicate finish. I’ve spent some time playing with this palette and the shades are totally buildable too I you want more of a colour pop!

The ‘Glow to go’ illuminating setting spray is exactly what it says on the bottle. It is a makeup setting spray with a subtle pinkish shimmer to it. There are no large sparkle pieces in this but more of an iridescent sheen for an all over glow. I’ve tested this out and I really love the extra subtle shimmer that this gives my makeup. I would use this on a night out opting for a minimal makeup look during the day time. However, I can see myself using this in summer over the top of BB cream to add a little extra dewy glow to my complexion.

The ‘Volume Hero’ and ‘Super Curl’ mascaras both surprised me. The curling mascara having a curved wand and the volumizing having a regular straight wand. I liked these mascaras and I didn’t expect too having struggled with cheaper mascaras in the past giving me irritated eyes. They were both wearable and didn’t smudge throughout the day. I didn’t get dramatic curl or volume and with my short stubby lashes I usually opt for a lengthening mascara however, I have to say that I can see myself reaching for these for a daytime mascara again and again. Did they perform like a high-end mascara? No. but they’re not priced that way either and so there’s definitely a place for these in my makeup bag.

My overall impressions of this brand are great! The hero products for me are all of the lip products that I tried here and the highlighter stick. I would recommend that if you’re thinking of trying this brand then don’t hesitate. Essence have hit the balance of price point and quality perfect and exceeded all of my expectations of the brand. I’m converted and will be back for lipsticks soon!

You can grab these online here or in store at Farmers NZ.
